The Richter scale, also known as the Richter magnitude scale, is a measure of the magnitude of an earthquake. The upper limit of the Richter scale is not fixed, as earthquakes of higher magnitudes can occur. However, the largest earthquake ever recorded had a magnitude of 9.5 on the Richter scale. This earthquake occurred in 1960 in Chile.
